Albany Mayor Kathy Sheehan, Pt. 1

This week in In Focus we take a look at a day in the life of the mayor of the capital of New York. Albany Mayor Kathy Sheehan joins JoDee Kenney to discuss a number of topics, including public safety. Mayor Sheehan talks about Albany’s response to illegal dirt bikes and ATVs, the city’s new emergency response center, auto theft, the Crime Analysis Center and more.

“We do everything we can to make sure that our people track these bikes and that when we find your bike and we take it, it costs $3,000 to get it back, which for most people means their bike or ATV is in is being seized, so we are taking it very seriously and we want to make sure we do everything we can to protect our residents and visitors to the city,” she said.

“The dispatch center has been a force multiplier for us,” Albany Police Chief Eric Hawkins said of the new dispatch center. “The proximity of the police and fire brigade is enormous, so that they can share information. We also have the technology necessary to respond efficiently. We hope this also helps us with recruitment and retention. This is a place where we are hoping that the coordinators will want to come work for us and that the people will want to stay here. We saw the opportunity to evolve, and this is a priority for us.”
