West Indiesthe co-hosts of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024showed their prowess in an impressive Group C encounter Uganda Saturday at Providence Stadium in Guyana. The Caribbean side put in a stellar performance and secured a comprehensive victory by a whopping 134 runs. This win significantly increases their chances of advancing to the Super 8 stage of the tournament.

Brilliant performance from West Indian bowlers

After posting a competitive total of 173/5, the West Indian bowlers unleashed a brutal attack, dismissing Uganda for a paltry 39 runs in just 12 overs. Akeal Hosein led the bowling attack with a remarkable five-wicket haul, dismantling the Ugandan batting line-up. Except tailpiece Juma Miyagi, who remained unbeaten on 13, no other Ugandan batsman managed to reach double figures. The collective effort of the Windies bowlers left Uganda reeling, cementing the Caribbean side’s dominance.

Andre Russell bowls a beauty to dismiss Robinson Obuya

One of the standout moments of the match was Andre Russel‘s excellent delivery that cleared up Robinson Obuya. The incident took place on the first ball of the fourth over of Uganda’s innings. Russell bowled a good length delivery with a hint of outswing, which Obuya, who failed to move his feet sufficiently, missed completely, shattering his stumps. The delivery was an example of Russell’s skill and precision and contributed to Uganda’s rapid collapse.

Rovman Powell praises the team’s performance

After the match skippered West Indies Rovman Powell expressed his satisfaction with the team’s performance and highlighted their improvement from the previous match. He noted that the team was somewhat lackluster in their opening match, operating at only 60 percent capacity due to some rust. However, in this game they increased their performance to about 70-80 percent.

Powell praised Hosein for his exceptional bowling, underlining why he is ranked third in the format, and recognizing his consistency against top teams. Powell emphasized the importance of playing well in challenging conditions and appreciated the support from the Guyanese crowd, which added to the team’s motivation and energy.

“We talk about improving. In the first game we were a bit flat. We had some rust in the first game. In the first game we were at 60 percent. Now we are working at 70-80 percent. Credit to Akeal, no wonder he is the number 3 bowler in this format. He has also done the same against the top teams. He bowled wicket to wicket and did his job. Cricket is not that easy here and teams have to play well. The Guyanese crowd was amazing,” Powell said during the post-match presentation.
