In the 13th match of the 2024 T20 World Cup, Ireland won the toss and elected to bowl first, with Canada eventually scoring 137 in the first innings. Nicholas Kirton, the left-handed batsman, was the star with the bat, scoring 49 off 35 balls, including three fours and two sixes.

The two sixes and one four came in a single against Craig Young, and his knockout clearly boosted Canada’s score, which at one point looked well below par. Kirton is originally from Barbados and the Caribbean flavor was evident in his stroke play.

The first ball was a full delivery on the leg stump line and Kirton made some space to let it go for maximum long on. The second delivery was a length delivery on the leg stump line and Kirton tucked it into the fine leg fence as a boundary.

Young decided to change the angle on the next delivery and bowled it from ‘around the wicket’ to leg. However, Kirton was up to the task again and lifted it long for a new maximum.

His hitting has taken Canada to a competitive total on a delivery that provides good assistance to the bowlers, and it would be interesting to see how Irish batsmen proceed in the second half.
