A new lido is being built in the park in East London, with 6 swimming lanes and a café

A new lido will be built in east London, the city’s first new outdoor swimming pool in decades. The swimming facilities at Valentines Park, Gants Hill, will include six 25-metre swimming lanes, changing facilities and a children’s pool.

There will also be a cafe, gym, dance and exercise studio, meeting room, outdoor picnic area and parking.

Construction will begin later this year and be ready for opening in autumn 2025, following approval by Redbridge Council’s Planning Committee on Wednesday 5 June.

The outdoor pool will be close to the original pool at Valentines Park, which was open from 1923 to 1995. The new pool is being built in the hope that it will stimulate the local economy and restore Valentines Park’s heritage.

The lido will include sustainability technology with solar panels for energy generation, air source heat pumps, water recycling systems and energy efficient lighting.

Mark Baigent, company director of regeneration and culture, said: “We are pleased to now be moving forward with plans to deliver the first new lido in London for decades.

“The old Lido at Valentines Park holds a special place in the hearts of locals. Here families enjoyed idyllic summer days right on its doorstep and it is so exciting that after almost 30 years a brand new lido and more will be introduced to the park where people can visit and create new special memories.
