Swimmer Elias Shaw found dead after being missing for two days | News

The body of a missing swimmer was found in Wando on June 4, two days after he was reported missing.

on June 2 around 8 p.m.

Elias Shaw, 62, of Charleston was fishing on Daniel Island when he decided to go for a swim at a nearby dock, according to a news release. The Charleston Police Department’s Harbor Patrol responded to a call around 8 p.m. in which witnesses claim they lost sight of Shaw after he fought against the current.

CPD began a search of the area with assistance from the Charleston Fire Department and a Coast Guard helicopter, but were unable to locate the missing swimmer.

Two days later, Harbor Patrol responded to Beresford Creek, where the victim’s body was recovered. The Berkeley County Coroner’s Office and CPD are investigating the incident.

The S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control reported 79 deaths from accidental drowning in 2022.
