After about a decade, a local bike shop chain in Chesterfield County has closed its operations south of the river.

Carytown Bicycle Co. recently closed its store in the Winterfield Crossing Mall.

It was not clear what the reason was for leaving the storefront in the Midlothian area of Chesterfield, or exactly when the store had its last day of business. Earlier this week, a sign at the entrance stated that the location was “permanently closed.”

The company’s stores at 3112 W. Cary St. in Richmond and 301 Maltby Blvd. in western Henrico remain open.

Carytown Bicycle’s website included a brief statement, which appeared to have been posted sometime after early April, noting that the Winterfield Crossing store was ceasing operations but that the other two locations “continue to perform well.”

The manager of the now-closed Midlothian store, Jason Anderson, who also manages the company’s Henrico store, declined to comment when reached Thursday.

The company’s Chesterfield store moved to Winterfield Crossing in 2019, moving from its original Westchester Commons location, which opened in 2015.

In Winterfield Crossing, the store operated in a 2,000-square-foot space at 14267 Winterview Parkway, next to Teriyaki Madness restaurant on a strip mall across from Midlothian Turnpike.

Carytown Bicycle’s departure from downtown follows the locally founded brand’s 2022 acquisition by Specialized Bicycle Components, a major bicycle and parts retailer in the bicycle industry. The California-based company did not respond to requests for comment for this story.

Carytown Bicycle was founded in 2007 in Carytown. In 2017, it opened its location on Maltby Boulevard, in the GreenGate shopping center in Short Pump.

Winterfield Crossing is supported by coworking chain Gather and an Aldi supermarket. Other downtown tenants include Fleet Feet, Wong’s Tacos and Virginia Credit Union.

The center’s newer tenants include vegan bakery Cinnaholic and Mason’s Famous Lobster Rolls, both of which plan to open soon.
