Columbus officer fired for sexual conduct at supermarket, another for assault

Two Columbus police officers were fired this week for unrelated incidents.

“Today I was informed of the termination of two Columbus police officers. As president of the Fraternal Order of Police, Capital City Lodge #9, I will review both unrelated cases to ensure the collective bargaining agreement is followed,” said union president Brian Steel.

Steel confirmed that Robert Spann was fired for inappropriate sexual conduct while on special duty at a grocery store, and that Donovan Bever was fired for out-of-policy use of force.

State records show Spann had worked at CPD since 2012, and Bever joined in 2020.

“Our legal obligation is to ensure that the rights of our officers are protected and that due process is observed. Each case will be carefully reviewed and an assessment of the merits will be made accordingly,” Steel said.
