The American trio faces the Final Qualifying Tournament test in Turkey, with a place in Paris targeted

June 13, 2024

Trenton Cowles, Brady Ellison and Jack Williams have arrived in the Turkish city of Antalya in search of one of three team quota places on offer in the men’s division for next month’s Olympic Games in Paris.

With temperatures in the Mediterranean resort reaching 40 degrees Celsius, the American trio will be hoping to be in red-hot form on Saturday as they compete in the final qualifying tournament.

Williams arrives after success at last weekend’s Easton Foundations SoCal Showdown in California, when he defeated Gabe Anderson 6-0 in the gold medal match.

He said after that win: “After Tokyo (2021), I knew what to expect – going through trials and the whole system – so as soon as I officially made our team, I said, ‘Okay, we have to do what we did again ‘. .

“We’ve done it before – qualifying for Tokyo with the Paris event three years ago – so we know what we have to achieve. Brady, Trenton and I all clicked well and were very supportive because we know how important everything is.”

Last time, the United States went to Paris – site of this summer’s Olympic Games – in the hunt for team spots in both the men’s and women’s divisions. Ellison and Williams were joined by Jacob Wukie, and the three won the final to claim one of the coveted team spots.

The women secured their team place with bronze in the final qualifying tournament in the French capital. MacKenzie Brown, Casey Kaufhold and Jennifer Mucino-Fernandez were teammates for Tokyo. This time the women’s team has Catalina GNoriega instead of Brown and their places in Paris are already secured. Nevertheless, the women will be present in Antalya, where the third leg of the Hyundai Archery World Cup will take place from June 18 to 23. They arrived early so they could cheer on the men.

Ellison is already assured of a place in the individual competition of the Olympic Games. The aim now is to secure additional places for Cowles and Williams, who qualified for the US team following the conclusion of the Olympic Trials in Florida last month.

Williams will be looking to return to the sport’s biggest stage after starring alongside Ellison in Tokyo. Ellison will be appearing in his fifth Games. Cowles is desperate to compete in what would be his first appearance at the Olympics, although he did claim gold at the 2018 Youth Olympics in Argentina.

World Archery will provide live coverage of Saturday’s team competition quarterfinals on archery+, starting at 7:55 a.m. ET. You can also follow live scores anywhere.
