Train traffic at Meppel has access to four different incidents in one day

Train traffic around Meppel suffered from problems on the track at four different times on Sunday. In the morning, no trains could run between Meppel and Zwolle due to a points failure. In the afternoon, signal and switch failures occurred between Meppel and Assen and Meppel and Steenwijk, while in the evening someone walked on the track between Zwolle and Meppel.

The signal failure between Meppel and Steenwijk lasted all evening on Sunday, but was resolved on Monday morning. The NS started storing replacement buses on this route, so that travelers could continue their journey.

“The storage between Zwolle and Meppel could be resolved fairly quickly with a temporary repair,” says Aldert Baas, repairer from ProRail. But that didn’t stop the problems.

“At 3 p.m. a new storage facility was created between Meppel and Steenwijk, which was really original,” says Baas. The disruption on the route between Zwolle and Meppel because the switch failure had been resolved in the meantime, but on the same route it was shut down again in the evening because someone walked on the track. Baas: “If someone walks on the track, all train traffic on the route is stopped. That is very inconvenient for travelers.”

The track between Zwolle and Meppel has suffered from disruptions more often. The result is that all train traffic to the North immediately comes to a complete standstill. On average, no trains run on the route for nine hours a week due to disruptions.

The House of Representatives has released 75 million euros to solve the problems on the railway near Meppel. For example, there will be additional switches, the station at Meppel will have an additional platform and the level crossings will be adjusted.
